Barcode Scanner Guide: Zebra DS2208 vs DS9308 vs Honeywell Voyager

Quick answer: Zebra DS2208 is a straightforward corded handheld scanner for general retail checkout, while Zebra DS9308 is a presentation-style hands-free scanner designed to sit on the counter and scan items quickly without being picked up for every transaction. Honeywell Voyager models are another practical option when merchants prefer a traditional handheld form factor.

When DS2208 is the better choice
The Zebra DS2208 is a corded handheld imager. Zebra lists support for both 1D and 2D barcodes. That makes it suitable for conventional retail checkout, loyalty codes, QR codes, and products where the cashier naturally picks up the scanner or item.
A handheld scanner is useful when products vary in size, barcodes are positioned awkwardly, or staff need to reach around the counter. It also gives the employee more control over exactly what is being scanned.
When DS9308 is the better choice
The Zebra DS9308 is designed as a hands-free presentation scanner. The cashier can move products in front of the scanner instead of lifting the scanner for every item. Zebra positions the DS9308 for point-of-sale environments and lists 1D, 2D, Digimarc and OCR capabilities on current product information.
This format can work especially well in convenience stores, pharmacies, specialty retail, and counters where many small items are scanned rapidly.
Where Honeywell Voyager fits
JaimePOS also carries the Honeywell Voyager 1200g and other Voyager models. These are useful alternatives when the business wants a more traditional handheld scanner workflow or has existing Honeywell deployment standards.
The key question is not simply Zebra versus Honeywell. It is whether the POS software supports the scanner interface and whether staff need handheld flexibility or hands-free speed.
1D vs 2D scanning
Older retail environments often focused on 1D UPC and Code 128 barcodes. Modern checkout increasingly involves QR codes, mobile loyalty codes, digital coupons and 2D labels. For a new purchase, a 2D-capable scanner generally provides more flexibility.
Both DS2208 and DS9308 support 1D and 2D scanning according to Zebra’s current specifications.
Handheld vs presentation workflow
Choose handheld when employees scan bulky products, barcodes are frequently hard to reach, or the scanner may be moved around the counter. Choose a presentation scanner when most products can be passed directly in front of a fixed scanning window and checkout speed matters.
Some stores use both styles: a presentation scanner at the primary register and a handheld scanner at a specialty counter or back-office station.
Compatibility questions to ask
- Does your POS application support the scanner as USB HID/keyboard input or require another interface?
- Do you need 2D QR code scanning?
- Will the scanner remain fixed on the counter?
- How much counter space is available?
- Are barcodes usually on small products or large/awkward items?
- Do you need a stand, mount, or alternate cable?
Pairing a scanner with the rest of the POS
A scanner is only one part of the checkout station. Retailers should also plan the POS terminal, receipt printer, cash drawer, and payment device together. See the JaimePOS Retail POS Systems page or browse barcode scanners.
